“A Stain on the Court’s Legacy.” Detroit Action Responds to Supreme Court’s Decision to Overturn Roe v. Wade

(Detroit, Michigan) — Statement from Jennifer Disla, Co-Executive Director of Detroit Action

“The Supreme Court’s ruthless decision to overturn the settled legal precedent Roe v. Wade is a stain on the court’s legacy. Banning abortion is violence. Not only will this decision force millions to carry pregnancies that will upend their futures, but it will also cost people their lives. History has proven that simply denying people access to safe and legal abortions will not stop it from happeneing. In fact, unsafe abortions is one of the leading causes of maternal deaths and morbidities in this country.

Marginalized communities already facing systemic barriers to healthcare will be hardest hit, especially Black women and other women of color, low-income people, rural and inner city residents, trans/nonbinary people, and young people. This will also lead to the criminalization of the poor and communities of color, as well as the healthcare workers who provide reproductive services.

Let us be clear: No court, politician, nor government should have the right to dictate decisions about abortion, pregnancy, and parenthood. It is a choice that should be made by a trusted individual, not right-wing extremists in power.

Gutting a legal right we’ve had for almost half a century is just the beginning of how this activist court will continue to limit our freedoms and target vulnerable communities. From reproductive rights to voting rights, we’ve seen firsthand how far this country is willing to go to keep Black, brown, and low-income communities down. But we will not concede or go away quietly. We will make Michigan a beacon of hope as we enshrine in our constitution the right to make decisions about abortion, birth control, miscarriage care, and childbirth without politicians interfering.

Detroit Action stands in solidarity with women, trans/nonbinary people, and repoductive service organizations, and we recommit to continuing the fight to help people access safe and legal abortions.”
