Detroit Action Statement of Solidarity with Palestine
We are heartbroken over the violence and death unfolding in the Gaza strip. As abolitionists, our mission, at home and abroad, is to build a society where everyone is free to live with dignity. Detroit Action is an anti-war, pro-peace community organization that believes in dismantling the systems of oppression that continue to harm Black and Brown communities across the globe. We stand unequivocally with Palestinian people in their fight for freedom from apartheid and colonization.
Under the decades-long military occupation perpetrated by the Israeli government, Gaza has become an “open air prison” for over two million people. Palestinians in Gaza have been violently driven from their homes, cut off from basic resources including water, food, shelter, and medical supplies. They face the daily threat of state violence — a similar fate that Black and Brown Americans face in Detroit and other cities that have become over-policed and under-resourced.
The United States and Israel are both guilty of violating international law and are preparing for mass genocide. While our elected “leaders” continue to provide billions of dollars in unconditional funding to support this cycle of violence, the same politicians show a lack of interest in ensuring our communities have access to basic resources.
Our organization and our members stand in solidarity with all those working towards a future with a liberated Palestine. The pathway to that future must include lifting the blockade and dismantling the apartheid system we see throughout the Gaza strip, while ending the dehumanizing occupation of the West Bank.
Our supporters here in Detroit will continue to fight against white supremacy, capitalism, and fascism — all of which are at the heart of this ongoing conflict. We applaud local and federal elected officials, like Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, who continue to speak truth to power and are working towards a just future for everyone. We encourage the wider community to give to and follow groups in Michigan that are actively working to support Palestinians, including Emgage Michigan.
On the ground, support organizations:
-Islamic Relief Fund
-Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund
-United Palestinian Appeal
-United Nations Relief and Work Agency for Palestinian Refugees
-Penny Appeal USA
In solidarity,
Detroit Action
